Local Authority Signal

A Local Authority Signal is a documented piece of place-specific evidence that an analyst uses when evaluating a business, page or local search result.

What it means

Examples can include a verified location, consistent owned facts, relevant local references, genuine reviews or observed result presence, but the label is not a Google metric. Google describes relevance, distance and prominence for local results without exposing exact weights, so an observed association must not be presented as a causal ranking factor.

Why it matters

Separating observable evidence from undisclosed platform scoring lets teams improve factual trust and local usefulness without manufacturing an authority score or promising movement.

Example

An audit records a staffed clinic, matching address and hours, references from recognized local institutions and genuine review history, then cites each source instead of assigning an unexplained authority number.

Common mistakes

Do not call every citation a vote, combine unrelated evidence into a hidden score, infer causation from correlation, buy reviews or links, or promise a local-pack position.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

source URL, location fact, reference type, review record, observation context, capture time, owner

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify unsupported authority claims, stale business facts, duplicated references and proprietary scores whose inputs or formulas are missing.

Recommendation prepared

AYSA proposes a source-level correction or evidence gap, labels uncertainty and avoids translating the record into an undisclosed Google weight.

Approval preview

The user sees every source, observed fact, collection time, interpretation, uncertainty and proposed business-controlled action.

Execution

AYSA can update approved owned facts and evidence records on supported systems; it cannot create third-party endorsement or control Google ordering.

Verification

AYSA rechecks the cited source, owned destination and observation context and records whether the approved correction became publicly accurate.

Limits

The evidence remains business-, market-, location-, platform- and time-bound; signals, recommendations, generated drafts, approvals and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is Local Authority Signal an official Google metric?

No. It is an analyst label for documented evidence, while Google does not expose exact local result weights.

Does one strong local reference guarantee visibility?

No. A reference is one bounded piece of evidence and cannot establish causation or a guaranteed result.
