Local SEO
Local Citation
A local citation is an occurrence of identifying information for a specific business location on a third-party resource, whether or not that occurrence includes a hyperlink.
What it means
Useful fields can include business name, location address, telephone, official URL, hours and location identifier. Google and Schema.org document these as organization or LocalBusiness properties, but Google does not define a universal local-citation score. A directory record, map profile and government registry can differ in ownership and evidentiary weight.
Why it matters
Location-level normalization prevents one branch's phone, address or closure status from being copied into another and avoids counting duplicates as independent confirmation.
Example
A retailer with three branches assigns each location an internal ID, then compares its official Location page with a chamber directory and map profile; a stale phone number is corrected without merging the branches.
Common mistakes
Do not require every citation to contain a Backlink, merge locations, count scraped duplicates as independent, overwrite source-specific fields blindly, confuse local citations with scholarly citations or Majestic Citation Flow, or guarantee map rankings.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
location ID, business name, address, telephone, official URL, hours, source owner, capture date
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify location collisions, stale identity fields, duplicate source records and differences presented without source ownership.
Recommendation prepared
The workflow maps each observation to one location and prepares source-specific corrections rather than forcing a blind global overwrite.
Approval preview
The user sees the official location record, third-party observation, field-level difference, source ownership and proposed correction.
Execution
AYSA can update approved owned-site location data and supported connected profiles; it cannot change every independent directory.
Verification
Owned-site fields are recrawled and supported profiles are rechecked while unresolved third-party records remain dated observations.
Limits
Directories refresh on their own schedules, legitimate formatting differences exist and no citation count guarantees local visibility.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does a local citation need to include a backlink?
No. The defining object is the location's identifying information, although a source may also link to the official page.
Is a local citation the same as Citation Flow?
No. Citation Flow is a Majestic link metric; a local citation is a business-location record.
