Query Classification
Query classification is the assignment of one or more documented labels to a search query for analysis, routing or planning.
What it means
Labels may cover intent, brand status, topic, funnel stage, risk or language. Semrush documents a machine-learning intent taxonomy, while Search Console offers branded classification with stated availability and accuracy limits.
Why it matters
Consistent labels help segment reports and route queries to suitable pages, but classifications remain model outputs or editorial judgments. Ambiguous queries can require multiple labels or Manual Review.
Example
`apple support` may be navigational toward a brand service or informational about device help; locale, result context and existing page behavior guide the final labels.
Common mistakes
Do not present a provider label as universal truth, force one class on mixed intent or hide model version and review status. Reclassify when context changes.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
raw query, taxonomy, SERP features, modifiers, brand context, confidence
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag unlabeled taxonomies, low-confidence assignments and classifications that conflict with observed pages.
Recommendation prepared
The proposal records labels, confidence, model or reviewer and a manual-review route for ambiguity.
Approval preview
The user reviews the taxonomy, evidence, uncertain cases and downstream routing before accepting labels.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved labels in the research dataset without changing public page content.
Verification
AYSA checks label consistency, version traceability and a sample of ambiguous queries after classification.
Limits
AYSA cannot infer private user intent with certainty or make provider taxonomies universally equivalent.
