Topical relevance

Topical relevance is the degree to which a page's main subject, entities and supporting information genuinely belong to a defined topic.

What it means

The assessment asks whether the page explains the topic and necessary relationships rather than merely mentioning associated words. It is not a universal Google score or a synonym for site-wide authority.

Why it matters

A clear topical boundary prevents unrelated expansion, thin subtopics and vocabulary added only for perceived breadth. It also helps decide whether related information belongs on the page or in a separate guide.

Example

A guide to payroll taxes is topically relevant when it covers taxable pay, rates and filing obligations; adding generic entrepreneurship statistics does not deepen that topic.

Common mistakes

Do not measure relevance by term count, imitate every competitor section or call an entire domain relevant because one article is strong. Define the topic boundary first.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is topical relevance the same as topical authority?
