AI answer source
An AI answer source is an identified resource visibly associated with an AI answer by the interface or by an authorized provenance record.
What it means
The association may appear as a link, citation marker, source card or documented input record. It does not by itself prove that every answer claim is supported, that the resource caused the wording, or that it was used for model training. Bing's AI Performance reporting counts URLs displayed as sources and explicitly separates those counts from placement, authority and each page's role in an answer.
Why it matters
A resource-level contract lets publishers verify URLs and claims without inflating a visible association into authority, causation or complete support.
Example
A Monitoring record stores the exact publisher URL shown beside an answer, its marker and capture context, then reviews separately which answer claims the page actually supports.
Common mistakes
Do not call any similar page a source, merge redirects without evidence, infer training use, treat a source count as rank, assume whole-answer support or ignore inaccessible and changed URLs.
