What it means
The value is calculated on a versioned graph of canonical pages and crawlable HTML anchor links. Homepage to category to product is depth two; URL folders, browser Clicks during one visit and JavaScript controls without crawlable links are different objects.
Why it matters
The metric reveals pages that depend on long or fragile navigation paths and helps reviewers distinguish discovery structure from superficial URL formatting.
Example
A guide reachable from Home → Resources → Guides → Technical SEO has click depth three; adding one relevant crawlable link from Resources reduces that graph distance to two.
Common mistakes
Do not count redirects as intentional navigation, use breadcrumbs that point to noncanonical URLs, confuse click depth with scroll depth, assume every menu link is contextually useful or claim a fixed depth guarantees Indexing.
