Click Depth

Click depth is the minimum number of crawlable internal-link selections needed to reach a target URL from a declared start page such as the homepage.

What it means

The value is calculated on a versioned graph of canonical pages and crawlable HTML anchor links. Homepage to category to product is depth two; URL folders, browser Clicks during one visit and JavaScript controls without crawlable links are different objects.

Why it matters

The metric reveals pages that depend on long or fragile navigation paths and helps reviewers distinguish discovery structure from superficial URL formatting.

Example

A guide reachable from Home → Resources → Guides → Technical SEO has click depth three; adding one relevant crawlable link from Resources reduces that graph distance to two.

Common mistakes

Do not count redirects as intentional navigation, use breadcrumbs that point to noncanonical URLs, confuse click depth with scroll depth, assume every menu link is contextually useful or claim a fixed depth guarantees Indexing.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

crawl snapshot, canonical URL, internal href edges, redirect targets, shortest path, orphan state, template

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify a supported owned URL whose shortest crawlable path is unnecessarily long, broken or dependent on noncanonical links.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal adds or repairs a small number of contextually relevant internal links on named supported WordPress pages.

Approval preview

The user sees the before-and-after path, anchor context, source pages and exact link edits.

Execution

AYSA can apply approved supported WordPress internal-link changes; it does not insert sitewide links solely to manipulate a numeric depth.

Verification

The affected pages are recrawled to confirm 200 targets, canonical consistency, visible anchors and the recalculated shortest path.

Limits

A short path does not guarantee crawling, indexing or ranking, and graph measurements change when templates, canonicals or eligibility rules change.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is click depth the number of folders in a URL?

No. It is a link-graph distance from a declared start page; URL path syntax does not establish the navigation path.

Does a lower click depth guarantee indexing?

No. Crawlable discovery helps, but indexing also depends on accessibility, canonicalization, directives, content and search-engine processing.
