LLM citation
An LLM citation is a visible attribution from an LLM-mediated response to an identifiable resource, expressed through a marker, link, title or other resolvable reference.
What it means
Citation presence and citation quality are different. A citation can resolve correctly yet fail to support the nearby claim, omit decisive evidence or leave other claims unsupported. Research on attributed LLM answers evaluates correctness and citation quality separately, while Bing's publisher reporting counts displayed sources without assigning rank, authority or a page's role in an individual answer.
Why it matters
A citation-object contract makes destination and claim support auditable without treating a marker as proof of grounding, endorsement or training use.
Example
A review stores citation [3], its resolved URL and source version, maps it to the adjacent claim and records supported, partial, contradicted or unverifiable status.
Common mistakes
Do not count broken markers, assume every citation supports its claim, merge several URLs, infer training data, treat citation count as rank, ignore source changes or guarantee visibility.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
response boundary, citation marker, resolved URL, source version, adjacent claim, support status, redirect, access error
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify broken or redirected citations, unsupported nearby claims, incomplete coverage and citation counts presented as rank.
Recommendation prepared
The workflow resolves each citation and prepares a claim-level support matrix with uncertainty preserved.
Approval preview
The reviewer sees the marker, destination, source passage, claim mapping, support status, unresolved issues and non-causation statement.
Execution
AYSA can audit supported public or authorized citations; it cannot expose private retrieval, ranking or training decisions.
Verification
Later checks preserve the original citation and flag destination, content or support changes.
Limits
Citation quality remains claim-specific, and provenance or review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.
