Product variant

A Product variant is a purchasable configuration within a product group that differs by defined attributes such as color, size, material or capacity.

What it means

A valid variant connects its attribute values to a stable product or offer identifier, URL behavior, price, availability and selectable customer state. Google's product-variant guidance uses ProductGroup relationships such as `variesBy`, `hasVariant` and `productGroupID`, but markup must reflect the visible merchandise model.

Why it matters

Explicit variant identity prevents unavailable combinations, wrong prices, duplicate URLs and Structured data from describing options that customers cannot actually select or buy.

Example

A 256 GB black phone has its own SKU, availability and selectable URL state within one model group, while a decorative image-angle choice remains presentation rather than a merchandise variant.

Common mistakes

Do not create variants for nonpurchasable UI states, reuse one SKU across distinct offers, hide selected attributes from the URL or page, mark impossible combinations available or let Structured data contradict visible price and stock.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

product group ID, SKU, attribute value, URL state, selected control, price, availability, structured data

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify duplicate identifiers, impossible combinations, ambiguous URL states and differences between visible selection, offers, feeds and ProductGroup markup.

Recommendation prepared

AYSA prepares a product-family contract mapping each purchasable configuration to identifiers, attributes, URLs, canonical policy and offer evidence.

Approval preview

The user sees each group and variant, selected attributes, SKU, URL, price, availability, markup diff, exclusions and inventory owner.

Execution

AYSA can publish approved owned-store URL, content and structured-data changes on supported platforms; price, inventory and merchandising truth remain merchant-controlled.

Verification

AYSA tests selection paths, requests each approved URL state, compares visible offers with markup and confirms identifiers remain unique and available combinations valid.

Limits

The evidence remains URL-, application-, crawler-, platform- and time-bound; recommendations, generated drafts, approvals, crawls and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is every product option a Product variant?

No. A display preference or image angle is not a merchandise variant unless it defines a purchasable configuration.

Does ProductGroup markup create variant relationships by itself?

No. Structured data must accurately represent visible products, attributes, offers and selection behavior.
