Sitemap index

A sitemap index is an XML file that lists the locations of multiple sitemap files rather than listing page URLs directly.

What it means

It uses a sitemapindex root with sitemap entries containing an absolute loc and optional lastmod for the child file. A sitemap index can reference up to the protocol limit, and each child sitemap retains its own URL and size limits.

Why it matters

Splitting a large or multi-type inventory into child sitemaps makes generation, Monitoring and Search Console diagnosis easier. A valid top-level index is still ineffective when child files fail, redirect unexpectedly or contain non-canonical URLs.

Example

A store publishes separate product, category and article sitemaps and lists their absolute URLs in one index. The generator changes the product sitemap lastmod only when that child file changes, and Monitoring fetches both the index and every child.

Common mistakes

Do not place page URLs directly inside a sitemap index, confuse child-file lastmod with page modification dates or list missing and redirected sitemap files. Avoid creating multiple competing generators that publish inconsistent indexes.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Index XML, child sitemap locations, child responses, protocol validation, lastmod consistency

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can find missing, redirected, invalid or competing child sitemaps and index entries whose timestamps are not trustworthy.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal specifies the authoritative index, child grouping and exact entries to add, correct or remove.

Approval preview

The user reviews the current index tree, responses and proposed child-file inventory before supported changes.

Execution

AYSA can update supported WordPress sitemap configuration; external generators, servers and CDN routes require their native controls.

Verification

AYSA refetches the index and every child, validates the XML structure and compares child URLs with the approved sitemap inventory.

Limits

A valid index improves discovery and monitoring but does not guarantee crawling or indexation of listed pages.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does a sitemap index list page URLs directly?

No. It lists child sitemap files. The individual child sitemaps contain the page or resource URLs.
