Sitemap URL

A Sitemap URL is a fully qualified address listed as a URL entry in a sitemap that the publisher wants eligible search systems to discover and consider.

What it means

Google recommends absolute preferred URLs and generally expects sitemap entries to align with canonical and Indexability decisions. Inclusion is a hint: it neither guarantees downloading, Crawling or Indexing nor replaces crawlable internal links from the site.

Why it matters

A governed entry set keeps discovery signals focused on current indexable pages and makes coverage reports interpretable without using the sitemap as a hiding place for orphaned or redirected URLs.

Example

An indexable product page returning 200 with a self-canonical is listed as `HTTPS://example.com/products/alpine-jacket/`, while its tracking alias and retired redirect source remain outside the current sitemap.

Common mistakes

Do not list relative addresses, redirected or Noindex pages, assume submission guarantees Indexing, fabricate last-modified dates, use sitemap inclusion instead of internal navigation or mix canonical preferences across files.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

absolute URL, status, canonical, robots state, lastmod evidence, internal inlinks, sitemap membership

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag relative, redirected, noindex, noncanonical, stale or orphan-prone entries and preferred pages missing from the governed sitemap.

Recommendation prepared

AYSA prepares an exact add, keep or remove diff tied to eligibility evidence, internal discovery and the responsible sitemap provider.

Approval preview

The user sees every affected entry, live response, canonical, robots state, last modification evidence, internal links and expected sitemap count.

Execution

AYSA can update approved sitemap output and owned internal links on supported systems; submission cannot force an external crawler to process or index a URL.

Verification

AYSA fetches the generated sitemap, validates syntax and counts, checks each changed URL and confirms excluded states do not reappear.

Limits

The evidence remains URL-, application-, crawler-, platform- and time-bound; recommendations, generated drafts, approvals, crawls and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does a Sitemap URL guarantee indexing?

No. Google describes sitemap submission and URL inclusion as hints that support discovery, not indexing guarantees.

Can a sitemap replace internal links?

No. Important pages should remain reachable through crawlable site navigation or contextual links.
