Generative search

Generative search is a product category in which a search or retrieval system uses generative models to synthesize a response and may present links to underlying sources.

What it means

The category covers products with different interfaces, retrieval systems, source treatments and availability rules. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Bing generative search are provider-native implementations, not interchangeable names for a single engine or shared ranking process.

Why it matters

Category-level language supports comparison, but product-level evidence is required before asserting how a particular result was generated, selected or cited.

Example

A study records Google AI Mode and Bing generative search as separate products, then compares visible answer text, source links and referrals without merging their observations.

Common mistakes

Do not treat every chatbot as search, assume all providers use the same retrieval stack, call visible source order a universal ranking or infer private model behavior.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

provider, product label, retrieval evidence, generated response, visible sources, timestamp

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag mixed-provider datasets, undocumented product labels and observations that confuse response text with a whole interface.

Recommendation prepared

The review separates category claims from provider-specific facts and defines one measurement record per product interaction.

Approval preview

The reviewer sees the product declaration, observable fields, unavailable internal fields and disclosure checkpoint.

Execution

AYSA can organize public or authorized observations; it cannot inspect private provider retrieval, ranking or generation traces.

Verification

Repeated queries create new timestamped records so interface and source changes remain visible.

Limits

The evidence is operational and sample-bound; it does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.
